Who We Are ...

Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church was founded in 1890 when a small group of believers began what was then known as the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.  After several years, a new facility was built facing Mass. Ave., and we changed our name to the Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church.  Progress did not stop, and in 1923 our present facility was purchased at 146 Hampshire Street.

The Massachusetts Avenue Baptist Church (MABC) is affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, USA and the American Baptist Churches, USA.  We are an evangelical, full-gospel ministry.  All this simply means that we are a Bible believing and teaching church.  Our belief is that Jesus is the answer for the world today, and that He promises everlasting life and abundance to all who believe in Him.  Further, we believe that God’s word (the Bible) when believed, confessed, and adhered to, will set mankind free from various bondages, which prevent us from experiencing the life of abundance that God promises to those who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ/ We believe in the present-day ministry and operation of the Holy Spirit.

A Word From Our Pastor...

One of the most extraordinary visions given by God to a prophet is recorded by the prophet Ezekiel.  (Ezekiel 47:1-12 NKJV)  Transforming rivers were flowing out of the temple from every entry way.  In the vision God calls Ezekiel to look at the impact of the flowing rivers, for once they enter the sea, the waters are transformed or healed.

The impact of these transforming waters has sustained my hope and vision for all people, cities and nations.

“And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live.  There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed and everything will live wherever the rivers goes.”  (vs. 9)

The overall vision that Ezekiel receives calls us to awaken to the transforming power of God by His Holy Spirit.  See the fish in the vision as representing the very lives of people everywhere who are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.  The environment is transformed. (vs. 12)  The very economy is transformed.  (vs. 10)

Today we seek the peace of our cities.  In so doing let us willingly present ourselves to the Lord our God through our Lord Jesus Christ and awaken to and move in the presence and power of His transforming glory.

In Christ,

Rev. Dr. Marilyn E. Weekes
Sr. Pastor
